Meet the Cana Ramblers...

Ashley Jones

An accomplished bass player, Ashley also has been blessed with a lovely voice. You can hear her on such tunes as "I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You" that lets her talent really shine. You can also hear her join in on some harmony.

When Ashley is not playing music, her time is filled with attending Virginia Tech two days a week and working in Winston-Salem the other three days.  Ashley is not just any girl! You know that old song, "I don't like spiders and snakes...." well, Ashley enjoys snakes, turtles and frogs. She admits that she's not that fond of spiders but then again, they are not amphibians either!

Laura Leigh Jones

A couple of years after little brother Will started playing, Laura Leigh found an instrument just her size.  Laura Leigh shares lead vocals with her Dad and Will as well as harmony. She can bring tears to your eyes with her soulful rendition of the hymn "In The Garden" or have your feet just a flying with her up-tempo version of "Train, Train". When you hear Phillip's latest penmanship on "Things, Things, Things" you'll know he had Laura Leigh definitely in mind.

In 2006 she won first place at the Dolly Parton Singing Contest in Sevierville, Tennessee with her moving rendition of Dolly's "If You Think God Won't Get You". Also in 2006 she released her first solo project on which she did it all: vocals, instruments, producing, recording, mixing and CD cover design! She released her first Christmas CD and a special version of "Frosty The Mow Man". There's a great story behind that song that you'll have to ask her about.

Laura Leigh is continuing the family tradition of being a Hokie at Virginia Tech. She's an avid history fan. Just ask her about the movies "North and South" and "Lonesome Dove".

Will Jones

Even though he's a young teen, Will has been playing on stage for several years.  Will has performed in several states now from Bangor, Maine to LaGrange, Georgia. He recently was featured in the magazine Flatpicking Guitar in a great article. His awesome work on "Cash's Last Ride", his own composition, is also featured in the magazine.

Will has won numerous blue ribbons for his flat-picking including four in a row at the prestigious Galax Fiddler’s Convention’s in the Youth Competition. This is a title that due to recent rule changes, no one else will hold. (Or as Phillip says, unless the rules change again!)

Those in attendance at the 2003 IBMA awards show in Louisville, Kentucky saw Will perform with Chris Thile and the Bluegrass All-stars reunion. He was a featured artist in the 2003 All-Star Youth Band.

Will enjoys being on his high school basketball team when he's not cruising around in his Dad's truck after recently acquiring a drivers license. Now his Mom has another errand runner to use!

Phillip Jones

Not only is he the father of the Jones kids and husband to Patricia, Phillip is a veteran musician having played bluegrass most of his life. While keeping his music on the side, Phillip is a practicing trial lawyer.  Playing in competitions and in regional bands, Phillip has his share of awards. If you'll note on the Cana Ramblers' CD's, he is also a songwriter extraordinaire. His total collection of masterpieces has yet to be unleashed, but they are in abundance.

Phillip is having a ball sharing his music with his children. Although Phillip plays lead and rhythm guitar, these days he leaves most of the fast and furious flat-picking to Will.  Family harmony with his kids and songwriting make this band his most satisfying effort ever.

When Phillip is not practicing law, songwriting (and he is an EXCELLENT songwriter) or picking bluegrass, you might find him with a fishing pole down at his pond too. Always full of energy and creativity, and a professed part-time insomniac, you never know when he might organize those midnight meetings at Waffle House!

Rick Allred

Though not a Jones, nor related in any way, Rick is a vital part of the Cana Ramblers ensemble on banjo. This versatile musician has been playing for many years.  Some may remember Rick for mandolin playing and recording with Charlie Waller and the Country Gentlemen.

Other fans will remember his steady hand with Summer Wages, Larry Sparks and the Lonesome Ramblers, and The McPeak Brothers. Rick was televised performing on the Grand Ole Opry with the Larry Stephenson Band. Rick now plays with the Cana Ramblers “because,” he says “it is just plain fun.” Not to mention that he enjoys being an instigator and participant in any mischievous frivolity the band can get into!

When Rick is not picking banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass or Dobro, you might find him joining the Jones at the family fish pond. If he's not there, you'll find him riding his John Deere through his pastures, talking to his Holstein cows with his favorite dog, "PJ" hanging close by.

Mary Alden & Caitlin Jones

These beautiful young ladies make up the total combination of triplets. Both are accomplished vocalists and have taken home many ribbons for there performances at local Fiddler's Conventions. Currently they add their angelic voices on occasion for guest vocal performances, especially at churches and fiddlers conventions..

The lovely young ladies are avid, and sometimes downright aggressive basketball fanatics. Not as fans but as players. With their mother's spunk and their father's energy, they are pretty hard to beat.

When they aren't singing or beating opponents on the court, you can find them sneaking open the front porch window to cuddle their cats, "Snake" and "Gray" or spoiling Laura Leigh's new kitten, "Trudy". It will be hard to find any greater pet lovers than these two!

Patricia Jones

There is truth to the saying that you save the best for last. Patricia is the band manager, audio/visual equipment manager, basketball coach, Physical Education teacher, meal coordinator, transportation coordinator, and the list goes on and on. She's the #1 fan, supporter and advisor for every Cana Rambler. She is also a #1 Mom - just ask any of them, even Rick!

Besides all her many talents listed above, Patricia is quite a singer and no stranger to blue ribbons herself. When Patricia is not trying to keep the rest of the Jones clan organized, you'll find her in flower gardens, cuddling the cats, "Snake", "Gray" or "Trudy", talking with her Lovebird, "Mango", racing Will on 4-wheelers to the pond for fishing or sneaking some well-hidden chocolate treats in her secret hiding place. And you won't find her staying behind when someone yells, "Let's eat Mexican tonight!" Ask her when her birthday is the next time you see her.

"Ruff", "Alli", "Snake" and "Gray" Jones

"Ruff" is the inspiration for "Ruff Dog" written by Laura Leigh Jones and performed by the Cana Ramblers on the "These Are The Cana Ramblers" CD. "Alli" is his faithful companion who assists "Ruff" in guarding the "old home place" while the Cana Ramblers ride the roads.

"Snake" and "Gray" are the latest additions of the feline manner. They get daily amusement from driving "Ruff" crazy!

Ginger Allred

Ginger is the #1.5 fan of the Cana Ramblers...and only because Patricia took the #1 spot! Though having a slight bias by being the wife of the banjo player, Rick, there is no doubt she has a tremendous admiration for all the amazing talent in this wonderful group. You'll see her standing next to Patricia at the merchandise table or sitting near or on the front row of a show with a camera in her hand trying to get the next best shot to add to the web site. Which leads to her next connection...she has recently launched this web site. Ginger has tried to capture the essence of what is the real Cana Ramblers because she feels, as many others do, that to know these wonderful people is to love them. She hopes you will get to know and love them as much as she does.

And if you don't find Ginger following the Cana Ramblers around or glued to her computer, you might want to check in her barn. She's probably hanging out with a bunch of goats! What is the old saying...you are the company you keep?

         They'll be home soon, Ruff.

Just keep an eye out for them...
